Are Mormons a Cult?

First of all, let's define the word cult. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (online) the original definitions for cult include:
  • Worship; reverential homage rendered to a divine being or beings.

  • A particular form or system of religious worship; esp. in reference to its external rites and ceremonies

Therefore any religion that includes worship of a divine being and has any type of religious practices or ceremonies is a cult. There are modern associations to the word that define a cult to be "A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister." The current membership of the LDS church is more than 11 million worldwide. A bit large for a "small group of people" don't you think? In addition the beliefs and practices of the church are all in harmony with the teachings of the Bible. So does that make us "strange or sinister?" Moses and the Israelites preformed sacred ordinances in the ancient tabernacle/temple. Mormons today preform sacred ordinances in temples likewise. Here we are married for time and eternity. All the practices of the LDS church are in harmony with the designs of God. If others disagree it is because their knowledge of God's plan is limited. It would be more beneficial, therefore, for the inquirer to seek the word of God and to understand it before criticizing any other faith.
